Isn't it time you got your bagpipe project started?
How long have you been thinking about taking bagpipe lessons? If you're like some of my students, it has been over 20 years. Isn't it time to get started? If you live in the Philadelphia region, I'd like you to give me a call. But don't buy anything first!! Most people wind up wasting money on bad quality bagpipe products by making impulsive and uneducated purchases. I will guide you through everything.
Again, The first thing you need is a teacher. You can buy 1 an hour of time for $50.00 and I'll coach you through the process. In most cases it won't take but a few minutes to evaluate where you are and give you the next assignment. We can do quite a few lessons in that 60 minutes. The second option is the Video Program. I have all of the lessons on a flash drive. It is available for $50.00. If you'd like to go that option, I'll put it in the pouch inside the workbook.
The next thing you need to get started, besides a teacher, is a practice chanter. I recommend the Gibson practice chanters on the left. Most people buy the R101 regular chanter. If you are a tall person, the longer chanters might fit you better. The first three are made of Polyplenco. They are great chanters as they are tonally correct so that you can hear the proper sound of the bagpipe scale. The last one is made of African Blackwood. It has a mellower tone.
If you want something fancier, the Dunfion African Blackwood Chanter is the Mercedes of the chanters. Its beautiful design and tone represent an instrument you can play forever!
The next part of the instruction puzzle is a teaching method. Over the last 12 years, I have developed a course known as "Bagpipes For Beginners". I wrote this program because I believed the majority of methods just didn't motivate my students. Most people quit any new project between 30 and 60 days out because they get bored or frustrated. I have a great retention record. It must be the method! Aside from the videos, the Work Book will help you develop your skills.
As you learn, you will need someone with whom to play, so I developed "Big, Slow & Open". This CD includes 32 tunes played at a slow pace so that a new person can follow and play along.

We did a marketing test here during the Christmas Holidays. "A Piper's Christmas" is a collection of Christmas songs, hymns and carols that I arranged for bagpipes. The music is what always motivated me to play this instrument. There are tons of tunes written for the "Great Highland Bagpipe of Scotland". The Burt Mitchell Books to the left are not method books. They are tune collections. "Pipe Teachers Assistant, Volume 1", for example, contains 62 of the most played bagpipes tunes. This is definitely the book to start your collection. The total collection includes 6/8 Marches, Competition 2/4 Marches, and Irish Tunes. Each book comes with a CD of Burt playing these tunes for you to hear. It is truly a great collection of books!
Rhythmic Finger by Jim McGilvery is the "Hannon" (if you are a pianist, “Hannon” is the technique bible) of the bagpipes. This is a technique book designed to make you a better player. Again this is not a method book for beginners. You should learn some music first before buying this book. However. it can take you to the top and make you a great player!
The two "Scots Guards" books are also tune collections. These are the bible of traditional bagpipe music books. They are a great value considering the number of tunes in each book.
Finally, CD's are great motivation for the new player. Below is a combination of solo and pipe band CD's. I absolutely believe that if you want to be good at playing this instrument, you should listen to CD's. The best place and time to listen to them is in the car on the way to and from work! Hearing and recognizing the end result of their hard work has motivated many of my students to become accomplished players.
